Profile Search Fields

You can perform a Profile Search in AABD using the following fields:

• Name
• State/Country
• City/County
• Occupation
• Religion
• Source
• Date of Birth
• Date of Death
• Gender

Name

From the Profile Search page, you can use the Name field to search for a person's name. To enter terms into the search box:

• browse a list of names, which you can transfer back to the search box;

  or

• type your search terms directly into the Names search box. Search terms may be full or partial names.
  Please Note: Full names must be entered last name first.

When searching in the Name field, you can use truncation to retrieve records containing variations on a name. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

State/Country

From the Profile Search page, you can use the State/Country field to search for any state or country indexed as a place of birth. To enter items into the search box:

• browse a list of States and Countries, which you can transfer back to the search box;

  or

• type your search terms directly into the State/Country search box. You may type either the state name in full or in its abbreviated form.

When searching in the State/Country field, you can use truncation to retrieve states or countries which are similar or variant. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

City/County

From the Profile Search page, you can use the City/County field to search for any city or county indexed as a place of birth. To enter items into the search box:

• browse a list of Cities and Counties, which you can transfer back to the search box;

  or

• type a city or county directly into the City/County search box.

Occupation

You can limit a Profile Search to search for those who held specific occupations. For an explanation of the occupation headings, see Categories of Occupation. A multi-select box allows you to browse a list of all occupations in AABD. If you do not select an occupation, AABD will automatically search all occupations. You can select occupations in two ways:

• scroll through the list and select one occupation. AABD will search only those profiles listing the selected occupation;

• scroll through the list and multi-select contiguous terms using SHIFT+CLICK and non-contiguous terms using CTRL+CLICK. Highlighted terms can be deselected by moving the cursor to the relevant term and using CTRL+CLICK. (Clicking on an item without holding the CTRL key will automatically deselect all other items.) All selected occupations are treated by default as if they were combined using the Boolean operator OR.
  Please Note: An item remains selected even if it scrolls out of the display.

Religion

You can limit a Profile Search to search for those who held specific religions. A multi-select box allows you to browse a list of all religions in AABD. If you do not select a religion, AABD will automatically search all religions. You can select religions in two ways:

• scroll through the list and select one religion. AABD will search only those profiles listing the selected religion;

• browse a list of Sources, which you can transfer back to the search box;

  or

• type a source directly into the Source search box. Search terms may be full or partial titles.

Date of Birth

You can limit a Profile Search to search for persons born within a certain time period.

The Date of Birth field can be searched in two ways:

• To search on a range of years, enter the relevant values into the from and to search boxes.

• To search on one particular year, enter the same value into both of the search boxes.

Date of Death

You can limit a Profile Search to search for persons who died within a certain time period.

Gender
